Hi, I’m Suzanne…

I’m a futurer, facilitator, and storyteller and I help people imagine and co-create hopeful, sustainable and resilient futures. I’m interested in the many different ways that we can explore and use possible futures to make change in the present.

I created this podcast as a place to play with stories of possible futures.

Too often, we fall into the trap of believing the future is fixed—that there’s only one future waiting for us. Depending on who you follow, that future might be full of doom, bursting with utopian promises, or something else entirely. But the truth is:

The future doesn’t exist. Not yet. It lives in our imagination.

And that means there are many possible futures—each shaped by different perspectives, assumptions, hopes, and fears.

So what if we used our imaginations? What if we could step into these imagined futures—just for a moment—and come back with new insights? What if these stories helped us spot risks, spark innovation, or simply better prepare for what might lie ahead?

Because here’s the thing:

We can’t shape—or avoid—what we can’t imagine.

And the systems that raised us—school, work, media—mostly trained us to operate in the world as it is, not the world as it could be.

This podcast is here to shift that. Through storytelling, playful participatory games, and a little time-travel of the mind, Hello, Futures! invites you to explore uncertainty with creativity, courage, and care.

I hope you’ll join me—ss a guest, as a listener, or in the conversations you spark after each episode.

Let’s stretch our thinking.

Let’s imagine what comes next.

Let’s play.

hello, futures: a playful podcast hosted by Suzanne Whitby exploring imagination, storytelling, and futures literacy.

My background

I’m lucky in that I have been exploring possible futures since I was able to read and, crucially, choose my own reading material! My first exposure to futures came through devouring volumes of science fiction and fantasy writing. Later, as a performance storyteller, I started to incorporate futures into my oral storytelling shows, transporting people not only into the worlds of traditional tales, but also into possible futures where humans were doing okay but not on planet earth. In my work as a facilitator and communicator with an interest in science, sustainability (social, environmental, and economic) and hope, I have been using futures as a tool to help businesses innovate, communities to think strategically, and individuals to explore their sense of agency. Finally, as a researcher at VU Amsterdam, I am exploring how multi-sensory, place-based stories of the future might help us encourage (climate) action.

I am the founder of two businesses, Futures Fit and SciComm Success, and several initiatives. Most of my work involves designing and delivering workshops, giving talks, and creating immersive experiences. I also host the Futuring Is… podcast. If you’re interested, you can learn more here.

I’m always open to finding new ways to apply my skills, experience, and creativity to make a difference. If you’d like to work together to make that happen, feel free to get in touch.
